The following briefly
describes my expertise and what I can offer as a
translator:
- almost 20 years of experience as a translator; university
degree in linguistics/translation; full-time in-house position as a
legal translator with a large U.S. law firm, LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene
& MacRae,
L.L.P. (present name Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP) in late 1990s;
- freelance practice in Canada since 2001; the most
significant projects in recent years included translation of numerous
Russian legal documents for a large U.S. law
firm
with the head office in Texas subcontracted through a translation
agency from the same state – various court decisions, rulings and
awards of the Russian courts of various levels and instances, Russian
laws etc., hundreds and hundreds of pages on what at that time was
one the most high-profile litigation matters, Russian to English,
2005-2007;
regular Russian to English translation assignments for the Moscow
office of one of the
largest international law firms, from 2005 to present; regular Russian
to English translation assignments for the New York and London offices
of a
large global translation agency,
2004 to present; translation
assignments for other translation agencies from the United
States, Europe and Canada; translation work for corporate clients
including in the oil & gas sector.
My previous employment
experience also includes having worked for several years as a word
processing operator with three large Canadian law firms, in a pure
English language environment. This unique experience allowed me
to further develop and broaden my technical skills, such as detailed
understanding of correct formatting methods and requirements, touch
typing etc., and presented an excellent opportunity to further polish
my language and legal language proficiency. Whenever possible I
try to apply professional formatting norms to the documents I am
working with as a translator, and there may hardly exist a formatting
issue I would not know how to solve.
As a translator, I
have all equipment and technical
solutions I need to efficiently work at a distance for my clients in
different countries and time zones,
such as a high speed cable Internet access supplemented with an
independent wireless Internet connection to ensure uninterrupted
access,
up-to-date software
and computer equipment. Of course, I work in full compliance with all
Canadian permit, registration and tax requirements as a freelance
translator.
Since 2005, I remain a
certified member of The Association
of Translators and
Interpreters of Alberta, ATIA,
the only professional accreditation organization
for translators in my province of
Alberta,
Canada; I am
also a
member of the national Canadian
Translators,
Terminologists and Interpreters Council, CTTIC, by affiliation. The process of
becoming a certified member of ATIA and, accordingly, having been
granted the
official title of Certified Translator (Canada) involved
stages of exams, with traditionally very low
passing rates, where I have successfully passed them all in first
attempt.
As a Certified
Translator and a member of ATIA, I am bound by and
fully subscribe to the
terms of the Code of
Ethics
of The Association of Translators
and Interpreters of Alberta, aimed to ensure high professional
standards with respect
to translation assignments and the translator-client relationship.
